WORLD’S TOUGHEST ROW

SEas LIfe ARE Rowing the Atlantic 2025

THE CHALLENGE

Rowing 3,000 MILES ACROSS THE Atlantic

The World’s Toughest Row is the premier event in ocean rowing. A challenge like no other.

In December 2025, Team Seas Life will set off from San Sebastián in La Gomera, Canary Islands (28°N 17°W), aiming to reach Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour, Antigua and Barbuda (17°N 62°W). The route spans more than 3,000 miles of open ocean.

We’ll be one of up to 48 teams from around the world, rowing across the Atlantic in shifts, 24 hours a day. This is a test of endurance, resilience and determination, made even more meaningful by the causes we are rowing for.

EAT. SLEEP. ROW. REPEAT.

The World’s Toughest Row brings together a vibrant community of adventurers from around the world. In the race village of San Sebastián, La Gomera, the atmosphere buzzes with anticipation as teams make final preparations for the crossing. Though we come from different countries, we are united by a single goal: to take on the Atlantic, one stroke at a time.

For Seas Life, this is more than a race. It is a test of resilience, teamwork and belief. Rowing unsupported across one of the planet’s most powerful oceans will push us beyond our limits, both physically and mentally.

We will face sleep deprivation, relentless waves and the raw force of nature. But every mile we row carries meaning. We are doing this to raise vital funds and awareness for six charities that represent courage, care and determination.

This is our mission. This is Seas Life.

WORLD'S TOUGHEST ROW FACTS

  • Neon icon of a breaking wave in white with water lines beneath it, on a black background.

We will experience waves that can measure up to 40ft/12m high. At its deepest, the Atlantic Ocean is 5.28 miles/8.5km deep.

  • Illustration of a boat with a brush on water, in a monochrome style.

We will row in excess of 1.5 million oar strokes over the period of our Atlantic row.

  • A round black clock showing the time as 10:12:28 on a black background.

Ocean rowers have the option to do a shift pattern (2 hours on 2 hours off) per 24 hours or we can do longer stretches of rowing anywhere up to 18 hours a day!

  • Silhouette of a whale tail splashing water

Ocean rowers can expect to see lots of wildlife, such as Minke and Pilot whales, Dolphins, Turtles, Flying fish and of course the Blue Marlin, whose bills have previously pierced through hulls of ocean rowing boats!

  • Gray silhouette of a person drinking from a bottle, holding a cup in the other hand.

We should aim to consume 10 litres of water per day. We will need to filter water from the ocean by using a desalinator. Rowers burn in excess of 6,000 calories per day. Each rower loses on average 12 kg crossing the Atlantic.

  • Icon of an old-fashioned mobile phone with a rotary antenna and a speaker icon indicating call or audio features.

We’ll have satellite phones which enables us to contact land support plus VHF to contact passing boats in the event of an emergency. Two land-based duty safety officers are on-hand 24/7.

  • Gray bucket with a handle and a poop emoji sticker, containing a dark substance, on a black background.

Each rower is expected to use 800 sheets of toilet paper during their crossing. There is no toilet on board – rowers use a bucket!

  • No swimming allowed sign with a person in water holding a cell phone, crossed out by a diagonal line.

All rubbish must be stowed on board and taken to the finish destination, the race organisers enforce strict environmental policies to preserve marine ecosystems. Participants also engage in beach cleans at both the starting point and the finish line, ensuring that only their footprints are left behind.

  • Icon of a money bag with a euro (€) symbol on it.

To date, the World’s Toughest Row has raised over €67.5 million for various charitable causes through the efforts of its teams and participants.

‘SHAKA SISI’
IS A RANNOCH R45 Ocean Rowing Boat

‘Shaka Sisi’ is a Rannoch R45 ocean-rowing boat, the 48th of its kind built, completed in October 2021. It was first used by the team “Dark Trio,” who set a world record for the fastest trio to row across the Atlantic during the World’s Toughest Row. Since then, the boat has gone on to complete multiple crossings, including the 2023 race with Blue Tusk (David Tiplady, Chris Wood and Aaron Kneebone – 38 days 19 hours 29 minutes) and the 2024 race with Deep Blue Crew (Patrick Ronan, Gus Knott, Matthew Bromham and Jack Ogden – 39 days 7 hours 55 minutes). Proven in some of the harshest ocean conditions, Shaka Sisi has earned a reputation as a fast, reliable and well-built R45 that continues to carry new teams safely across the Atlantic.
